When the analysis has no data: Lessons for Vietnamese sports journalism

One empty stadium in Melbourne taught me that silence can tell the truth. Today I received an analysis with no player name, no tournament data, no tactical metrics; every section ended with “insufficient information.” Many would call that a failed report. I call it honest. In 27 years of covering sport, I have learned that numbers are only useful when placed in context, and that conclusions are dangerous when they lack evidence. Vietnamese football often skips this step: a coach loses twice and is fired by public opinion; a striker fails to score for three games and is called finished. We publish verdicts without studying pressing data, workload, expected goals or the difficulty of the fixtures. A good analysis must be built on layers: tactics, data, scheduling, landscape, rules, management, risks and media narrative. If one layer is missing, we should say so. This is not weakness; it is the discipline that protects athletes from harmful narratives. Empty data should not force us to make up stories. It should force us to ask better questions. That is the lesson I want Vietnamese sports media to learn: the most powerful sentence a writer can write is sometimes, simply, “we do not have enough information yet.”
