The Empty Spreadsheet: When a Sportswriter Chooses Silence Over Fabrication

That summer in Saigon, I learned that data also needs watering. But for an analyst, the fact that a verification system is willing to write "insufficient information" in all nine boxes is a sign of honesty. The Vietnamese sports media industry currently faces constant publishing pressure. Transfer season creates hundreds of rumors. National swimming meets create hundreds of athlete profiles, but not every profile contains valid quantitative information. A swimmer can be mentioned without basic technical data: 50-meter time, stroke rate, distance per stroke, underwater phases, reaction time. When there is no data, the best thing an analyst can do is say so clearly. After sixteen years of observing the industry, and eight months spent with data from 2,400 Serie A matches from 2026 to 2026, I learned one thing: data structure is the real main character. Emotion is the most expensive thing in the transfer market, but it is also expensive on the analyst's desk. If emotion is allowed to fill empty cells, the writer pays with credibility. So before every swimming analysis, I ask three questions. Where does the number come from? Was the result achieved in a 25-meter pool or a 50-meter pool? Has the outcome been cross-checked with at least two independent datasets? Many failed sports predictions rely only on "form" described through emotion. They ignore time zones, fatigue levels, pool conditions, and training context. An empty analysis can therefore be a counter-intuitive finding: it shows an organization stopping at the right moment, instead of creating a fake story. In a data journalism culture that is still young, the ability to refuse to write without enough evidence is a rare professional skill. The next time an analysis document arrives with many blank spaces, ask this: where is the source? Who is the author? From which league, pool, and season do the numbers come? If no one can answer, the most honest article may contain only one sentence: numbers do not lie, but they know how to hide something. And an empty spreadsheet is sometimes keeping the biggest secret of all — the honesty of the analyst.
