Ryder Cup 2027: U.S. Drops Money-Based Points, Qualifying Opens in January in California

The starting line for the United States team at the 2027 Ryder Cup will sit in the California desert, in mid-January, at The American Express — a tournament with no deep history that, by any conventional golf reckoning, has nothing to do with a Friday afternoon at Adare Manor.

The PGA of America announced on September 9 that qualifying for six automatic spots on captain Jim Furyk's team begins there, runs across 31 events and closes after the BMW Championship in August 2027. Results from the previous year are gone. Prize money is no longer converted into points.

Seven years ago I sat down and logged every number from a football match just to understand why a team with 39 percent possession won 2-0. That habit followed me into golf: before trusting a points list, I ask what it is built from, who builds it, and who benefits from building it that way. The new U.S. points list is the most worth questioning thing this week.

The old system ran on an easily explained logic: points equal money. Whatever a player earned at a tournament, divided by a conversion rate, became Ryder Cup points, with a multiplier for majors. In several cycles, results from the previous year's biggest events — the majors and the Players Championship — also counted, stretching the race across nearly two years.

The problem sat in the variable the PGA Tour has changed repeatedly over the past half-decade: purses. With Signature Events paying far more, a regular Tour event can now out-earn a major from a decade ago. The points list therefore measured scheduling more than it measured quality. Furyk said earlier in 2026 that the dramatic shifts in PGA Tour purses had made money a less reliable way to compare performances across different events.

The story behind the new list is the more interesting part. Adare Manor in Ireland will host the Ryder Cup from September 17 to 19, 2027. The Americans have not won on European soil since 2026, when they won at The Belfry, 15-13. Since then their trips to Europe ended at Valderrama 2026, The Belfry 2026, The K Club 2026, Celtic Manor 2026, Gleneagles 2026 and Le Golf National 2026 — all defeats. Rome 2026, where Europe won 16.5-11.5, only deepened the picture.

A team changing how it picks its players after a run like that is normal. The question is what they are trying to fix.

The new list assigns fixed values based on tournament strength rather than money earned. Major winners: 3,000 points. Players Championship: 2,850. PGA Tour Signature Events and the first two FedEx Cup playoff events: 2,250. Standard full-field events: 1,500. Players who make the cut and complete those tournaments also earn points by finishing position, and opposite-field events do not count. After the BMW Championship, the top six eligible Americans take automatic spots; Furyk fills the other six with captain's selections during the week after the Tour Championship.

The first thing this list reveals is a hierarchy of tournaments — and it compresses the gap between them far more than most people assume. A major is worth only 33 percent more than a Signature Event. That means two Signature wins, plus the points from a few made cuts, can outscore one major title. Anyone who believes the Ryder Cup is decided by who handles the most brutal events will not find that belief in the 3,000-to-2,250 ratio. They will find a different one: consistency at the top is now nearly as valuable as absolute peak.

The eight-month window is the second heavyweight change. Thirty-one events from January to August creates a dense race with no buffer. Previously, previous-year results banked points, letting a player start a Ryder Cup year with capital and manage his schedule calmly. Now everyone starts at zero in mid-January. A player who won a major in 2026 enters the 2027 race with nothing. That is deliberate: the team is selected on current form, not on a résumé.

The requirement to make the cut and complete the tournament deserves a close read. A player who withdraws in the third round, for strategic or personal reasons, forfeits every point for that week. Under a money-based system, withdrawing simply meant earning nothing; here it is a loss explicitly defined in the regulations. Small technically, large behaviorally.

Excluding opposite-field events entirely is another choice worth naming. In many seasons, those parallel events were where players outside the top 50 accumulated points and stayed sharp. Under the new list, those weeks carry no Ryder Cup value. Logically it holds: beating a weaker field should not count like beating an elite one. But it also means the autumn no longer plays any role in defining the team, and players will act on that information.

One detail matters more than all of the above, and it sits in the part that did not change. The structure of six automatic spots plus six captain's picks has been maintained across recent Ryder Cups. The points list can be redesigned to look more objective, but half the roster still rests with one man. Shortening the window from nearly two years to eight months increases the number of players hovering around sixth place, and raises the value of seventh, eighth and ninth. Making qualifying more transparent does not shrink the captain's authority; it may make that authority harder to challenge, because every comparison has already been quantified.

In principle, the new U.S. system moves closer to how Europe has long operated, where points lists are built on competitive ranking rather than converted prize money. That is worth crediting.

But if the real goal is winning at Adare Manor in September 2027, then the new list is solving a problem that is not the problem that has beaten the Americans for three decades.

Since 2026, the U.S. has changed its selection system repeatedly: nine automatic spots and three picks in some cycles, eight and four in others, now six and six. The results on European soil stayed the same. When a variable keeps changing and the outcome does not, that variable is not the cause. That is the most basic form of reasoning, and the easiest to skip when an organization needs to announce it has acted.

There is one more absurdity, and this time I have to ask the follow-up immediately: so what? Furyk says the system will help identify the strongest players in September 2027. But the points window closes after the BMW Championship in August, and the Tour Championship that follows does not count. The system measures form through August and then makes a claim about September. Every statistic can lie; my job is to catch it in the act. Here it lies in the future tense.

The 2026 fall did not stop me — it redirected the whole track. But it also taught me something about races with a cutoff: the leader at 350 meters is not necessarily the first to the line. Leading a points list in August is information about August. The Ryder Cup is played in September, on a course most Americans have never played, in front of a crowd that is not cheering for them.

What is worth watching across the next 31 events is not who tops the list, but who learns to play it. A new system, like a new course, does not reward the strongest — it rewards whoever reads it fastest.

And if six spots are decided by 31 tournaments while six are decided by one man, then the question I want to carry to Adare Manor is this: which part of the U.S. team is actually selected, and which part is merely announced?
